Top Places to Visit in Moscow

One can arrive in Moscow at one of four international airports or any of the nine railroad stations, or by boat on the Moscow River. Moscow has one of the largest metro systems in the world with 188 magnificently decorated stations. Keep in mind that all of the directions and information at the stations is in Russian, although it is easy to read and easy to access information.

While it is hard to believe only spending one day in this fabulous city, one can do many things. Let us list some of them.

  1. Red Square, seen on almost every photo taken of Moscow, is one of the symbols of this great city. There are several monuments located around, so we will deal with them individually.
  2. The Kremlin is the home of the Prime Minister and the location of many civic activities.
  3. Lenin’s Tomb, located here is not easy to explore. It is strange to see his body lying in this glass coffin. For years, there is speculation that it is only a wax figure.
  4. The Armory is the world famous museum housing the legendary Faberge Eggs. While filled with many treasures of the Tsars and ancient rulers, it is a true masterpiece.
  5. St. Basil Cathedral, located at the end of Red Square and no photos are complete without including it. Built during 1555 to 1561 by orders of Ivan the Terrible, it is a beautiful experience. Its colorful spires are awe-inspiring.
  6. Gum Department Store, located on the opposite side of the Kremlin, was for many years, the largest department store in the world. During the Revolution of 1917, it housed over 1,200 stores. It is truly impressive to see.
  7. Arbat Street is THE shopping street of Moscow. Here, one can eat a McDonalds, or Kentucky Fried Chicken, as well as enjoying some of the finest French Cuisine. Many modern chain stores have taken up residence along Arbat Street.
  8. Gorky Park, named for the famed Russian, Maxim Gorky, underwent a complete overhaul in 2011, and is now one of the most beautiful, relaxing parks in the world.

As mentioned previously, the Metro is a museum by itself. It contains some of the most beautiful art works of any museum. One must ride the Metro if only for one stop and come back, however, that would miss some of the most beautiful stations.

There are so many sites to see that it is just not possible to list them in this small article. Just enjoy as many of them as possible.
