Overview

The U.S. Virgin Islands island of St. Thomas is the location of Charlotte Amalie, the most popular boating port of all Caribbean islands. This 32-square mile island is overflowing with gorgeous beaches, emerald hills, and towering mountains covered in fantastic cottage houses that make the island a sight to behold. St. Thomas is the most Americanized of all of the U.S. Virgin Islands with stylish resorts, fine dining, and fashionable stores. It’s shopping is some of the finest in the Caribbean, and its architecture speaks of the island’s colonial past in a breathtaking way.

Sightseeing Attractions

The most popular St. Thomas sightseeing attraction is Drake’s Seat, a hilltop above the port where Sir Francis Drake used to sit and watch his fleet of boats. Beyond this, Mountain Top offers a spectacular view of the U.S. Virgin Islands, though interested tourists will have to hike to the top in order to experience this attraction. Magens Bay Beach is a gorgeous St. Thomas coast, named recently by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Finally, the colonial architecture that spans across the island is a worthwhile sightseeing experience of its own and best taken in during a day-long stroll though the island streets.

Nightlife

St. Thomas is well known for having the best shopping attractions in the Caribbean. Charlotte Amalie is the best place to venture for a day of shopping, notably Waterfront and Main Streets. Dining is a fabulous experience on St. Thomas, with restaurants offering everything from traditional Caribbean dishes to Asian cuisine to typical fast food outlets. The fresh fish dishes are everything you’d expect from a Caribbean island. There are also numerous bars and clubs across the island where visitors can indulge in drinking and dancing to live music.

Outdoor Attractions

St. Thomas has numerous nature reserves and parks. Tourists will enjoy kayaking and snorkeling through St. Thomas’ Marine Sanctuary and Mangrove Lagoon. From January through April, humpback whales can be seen mating off of the north end of the island. Tourists who enjoy hiking will adore St. Thomas’ many mountains that are perfect for climbing. The mountain tops offer a spectacular view of the Caribbean Sea and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Boating is another popular outdoor activity, as well as golfing. St. Thomas is home to some highly-rated golf courses. Finally, vendors across the island will offer many other outdoor activities, such as parasailing, horseback riding, and scuba diving.
