Most people have goals in their head, not on paper. Writing your goals on paper is a basic and important step in the goal setting process. It also is one of the most disregarded. Why is this step so important? It is important because it forces you to really consider what it is you want to achieve. Putting your goals in writing creates a road map and a clear destination that will empower you to achieve your dreams.
Engaging in generic goals, or unwritten goals, will only produce wishful thinking. For example, a common generic goal for many is losing weight. If left unwritten, would this goal really mean something? Would it be something you really want or just something you always say every year? Would you be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to achieve it? When you put your goals in writing, you are making a commitment to work on them.
For one reason or another, when you put something in writing it seems to be more permanent. It inevitably makes everything more concrete and keeps you on track. If you have written goals, you can refer back to them when obstacles and road blocks try to derail you. They will serve as your foundation during rocky times. If you do not put your goals in writing, chances are you will easily forget about them. Just like feeling confused at the grocery store when you forget your grocery list, you can become distracted and confused when you don’t have a solid list of goals in place. You can review your written goals daily to keep you on track.
Without a clear and defined plan goals are rarely accomplished. Without a plan, it is too easy to get sidetracked and off the path to reaching your goals. Just like a football player needs a game plan, you need a game plan to change your life. Don’t skip this important step — take the time to think about your goals and to put them into writing. You will then have a real, workable path to achieve your dreams.
